The Immigrant Rights Attorney is a critical member of our growing Immigration Practice Group who will work on the new Liberty Defense Project, a recently created initiative funded by the State of New York. This statewide initiative is currently funded under a one-year contract.
We anticipate hiring a team of 4-6 new staff to work on this project and to join our current staff of immigration lawyers, paralegals and Immigrant Justice Corps Fellows working on Long Island and in the Hudson Valley.
The primary focus of this position will be to provide legal counseling for immigrants facing possible detention and deportation with direct representation in immigration law matters to mostly Spanish speaking immigrants in the lower Hudson Valley. This position is based in our Yonkers office but will serve both Westchester and Rockland Counties.
Primary responsibilities will include:
• Providing direct representation to immigrants in:
o Removal proceedings
o Ancillary family court proceedings (SUS)
o Naturalization and adjustment of status
o Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals
o Special Immigrant Juvenile Status
o U Visa petitions
o Asylum applications and hearings
o Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) self-petitions
o Federal Court appeals
o Administrative Appeals
o Other immigration and civil matters
Candidates for this position will possess:
• Be fluent in Spanish, both written and verbal
• Have at least 3 (three) years of relevant work experience
• Be able to produce high quality written material, meet tight deadlines, and to work
both independently and as part of a team
• Have strong analytical and writing skills
• Be experienced in interviewing and counseling clients in both English and Spanish
• Be willing and able to serve a geographically wide-spread area, including assisting
clients in Rockland County
• Admitted to practice in New York with at least 3 years relevant work experience
