The New York Bar Foundation is accepting applications from nonprofit or public interest legal organizations to receive funding to host a law student intern. The fellowship was renamed the Jana Springer Behe Corporate Counsel Section Fellowship in honor of Jana Springer Behe whom passed away unexpectedly this year. Jana was Chair Elect and an Executive Committee member of the NYS Bar Association’s Corporate Counsel Section, and Corporate Counsel Section Delegate to the NYSBA House of Delegates.
One New York State organization will receive a grant of $7,000 to award a summer fellowship to a second-year law student. Gifts to The Foundation from the Corporate Counsel Section of the New York State Bar Association and other donors provide funding for the fellowship.
The goal of the Fellowship is twofold. First, to provide the selected organizations with the chance to have students from a diverse range of backgrounds provide assistance without cost and second, to provide students from a diverse range of backgrounds with an opportunity to experience in-house legal practice. The student will assist the organization’s general counsel or similar counsel position, with matters relating to counsel or advice to the organization from June to August, 2018.
The deadline for interested organizations to apply is October 15, 2017.
Organizations need to fill out the grant application on The Foundation website at www.tnybf.org/grant and note that the application is for the Corporate Counsel Fellowship. Applications should be sent to The Foundation, 1 Elk Street, Albany, NY 12207.
