All applicants must successfully pass both the Written and Oral Exams in order to provide court interpreting services in the New York State Unified Court System. For languages other than Spanish: The written examination assesses applicants’ English language proficiency and knowledge of legal terminology. View sample test questions for this examination.
For Spanish: This written examination assesses applicants’ language proficiency in both English and Spanish, and knowledge of legal terminology. View sample test questions for this examination.
This examination assesses applicants’ ability to interpret in various modes, i.e., sight, consecutive, and simultaneous in the six sections of the exam. To view a practice video of the oral language exam, go tosight translations (Part I and II) and to the consecutive and simultaneous interpreting sections (Parts III to VI). Although this video is for the Spanish language only, the format is similar for exams in other languages.
*Note: Applicants who were scheduled to take the written examination but did not appear, must submit a new application in order to be considered for the written examination.
Reciprocity and Exam Waiver
Interpreters possessing out-of-state court interpreter certification(s) may apply for NYS-UCS reciprocity. Please refer to Reciprocity Provisions for more information. Applicants seeking reciprocity or an exam waiver must complete the Per-Diem Application Form and the Exam Waiver/Reciprocity Form.
