It is with deep sorrow that the Puerto Rican Bar Association announces the passing of Mario A. Torres, beloved husband of the Honorable Jeanette Ruiz, Administrative Judge of the New York City Family Court. Mr. Torres, 62, was a leader in New York City Government, the performing arts and the Hispanic Community.
Mr. Torres was the founder and director of Mario A. Torres (MAT) Productions, which promoted and brought Latino music productions to New York City, Pennsylvania and South America. He served New York State as Vice President of Governmental Relations/Community Affairs at Battery Park City Authority from 1989 to 2002. In this capacity, he created, implemented and hosted “The Emerging New Yorker Breakfast Series” which brought minority and women business owners together with civic and community leaders to discuss Issues that impacted communities of color in New York City.
Mr. Torres served on the boards of many business, civic and not-for profit organizations and was committed to the arts and improving and enhancing New York City government’s ability to serve its citizens, especially those in the Latino community. He was honored with many awards for his work, including, in 2003, the prestigious Bobby Capo Lifetime Achievement Award. He was devoted to his family including his wife of 18 years, his three daughters, his sisters, and his parents, all of whom survive him.
