On June 30, 2015 the PRBA held an accredited CLE program and conference to discuss the Puerto Rican Economic Debt Crisis in Puerto Rico at the office of the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration. Over 100 lawyers and non-lawyers attended the program which was held in Manhattan at the Puerto Rican Federal Affairs . Panelists included: Prof. Antonio Nadal, Prof. Andres Matias, David Fernandez, Esq., Sandra Rivera, Esq. and Marissa Soto, Esq. At this conference, PRBA resolved to work on future programs with a Call to Action to educate attorneys, the public and legislators about the crisis and work on projects and strategies to assist Puerto Rico. July 23, 2015 the PRBA hosted a CLE “Pathway to the Judiciary” at the Civil Court, Queens County to educate, discuss and encourage diversity in the Judiciary with over 75 attendees. The PRBA plans to hold future Diversity in the Judiciary events scheduled in Albany, October 7, 2015, Brooklyn September 24, 2015 and Bronx (TBD), Nassau County (TBD).
On July 31, 2015, PRBA President Betty Lugo attended the ABA Convention in Chicago to witness the induction of Paulette Brown, Esq. as ABA President (First African American Woman ABA President) and Ambassador Mari Carmen Aponte, Esq., recipient of the Margaret Brent Award.
On August 11, 2015, PRBA President Betty Lugo attended a conference on the Economic Debt Crisis in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Centro de Estudios Avanzados, where the panelists spoke on the “Call to Action” to urge the Federal Government to exempt Puerto Rico from the 1920 Cabotage laws (Ley de Cabotage) that are severely crippling the Puerto Rican economy. A Proposed resolution was circulated by the Diasporicans. Guests and Panelists included Puerto Rico Secretary of State, David Bernier , PR Senadora Rossana Lopez Leon, Mildred Rosas, Agenda Ciudana and Dr. Maria Josefa Canina Arroyo, Phd. The Proposed Resolution will be circulated by the PRBA to various States.
