On November 2, 2020, New York State Court of Appeals Judge Leslie Stein announced that she will retire from the Court effective June 4, 2021. The New York State Commission on Judicial Nomination will accept applications from candidates seeking to fill the vacancy on the Court until December 31, 2020. Applying to the Commission is the first step in becoming a Court of Appeals judge.
Candidates must be residents of New York State and have been admitted to practice law in New York for at least ten years. The Commission evaluates applications and provides a list of recommended candidates to the governor. The governor then appoints a person on the recommendation list, subject to Senate confirmation. Court of Appeals judges serve fourteen-year terms.
