El Honorable Langston McKinney falleci\u00f3 el 20 de mayo de 2024. El comit\u00e9 ARRIBA se entristece por la p\u00e9rdida del Juez McKinney como un querido miembro y pilar de la comunidad legal de Syracuse, as\u00ed como uno de los mayores animadores de ARRIBA cuando formamos por primera vez este subcomit\u00e9 de la PRBA. El juez McKinney deja tras de s\u00ed un legado de logros impactantes guiados por el compromiso de promover la diversidad y la equidad en el \u00e1mbito jur\u00eddico. Un legado que resuena profundamente en el comit\u00e9 ARRIBA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

T<\/u><\/strong>l legado del Honorable Juez McKinney:<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n\n\n\n

El juez McKinney naci\u00f3 y creci\u00f3 en Miami, Florida. Estudi\u00f3 en la Universidad Howard y se licenci\u00f3 en Qu\u00edmica. Despu\u00e9s de asistir a la Universidad Howard, la vida del Juez McKinney se convirti\u00f3 en un proyecto, una serie de \"primeros\", que allan\u00f3 el camino para las generaciones futuras e inspir\u00f3 a los que le rodeaban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tras asistir a la Universidad Howard en 1965, fue contratado como primer cient\u00edfico negro en la Divisi\u00f3n de Investigaci\u00f3n y Desarrollo de Carrier Corporation en Siracusa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En 1968, cuando asisti\u00f3 a la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de Siracusa, era s\u00f3lo uno de los cuatro estudiantes negros. Junto con sus compa\u00f1eros de clase, cofund\u00f3 la secci\u00f3n de la SU del Consejo de Investigaci\u00f3n de los Derechos Civiles de los Estudiantes de Derecho, lo que le permiti\u00f3 ayudar a los residentes de Albany (Georgia) a luchar contra la supresi\u00f3n de votantes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tras licenciarse en Derecho, cofund\u00f3 Maye, McKinney & Melchor, el primer bufete de Syracuse propiedad de negros que defend\u00eda los derechos de los inquilinos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En 1986, el juez McKinney se convirti\u00f3 en el primer juez municipal afroamericano de Siracusa cuando fue nombrado para sustituir a la juez Mathilde Bersani, que se jubilaba. McKinney ganar\u00eda tres elecciones, en 1987, 1997 y 2007, y se retir\u00f3 en 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fue miembro fundador de la Asociaci\u00f3n de Abogados de Minor\u00edas William Herbert Johnson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En el banquillo, McKinney cre\u00f3 el Tribunal de Tratamiento Comunitario de Siracusa para ofrecer tratamiento a los acusados de drogadicci\u00f3n que se enfrentan a delitos no violentos como alternativa a la c\u00e1rcel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

S\u00f3lo por nombrar algunos... o varios si nos ponemos t\u00e9cnicos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El juez McKinney deja una huella indeleble en la comunidad jur\u00eddica de Siracusa y en el subcomit\u00e9 ARRIBA. Citando un art\u00edculo de la ciudad de Siracusa sobre \u00e9l, \"El juez McKinney es famoso por decir que la justicia no se limita a la sala del tribunal, sino que es un esfuerzo de la comunidad. Es un esfuerzo que perdura tanto en el coraz\u00f3n de la ciudad como en el de sus residentes\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
