Dear Members:
The New York City Bar Association is in the midst of an effort to encourage lawyers and law students across the nation to take action to protect the 2024 election. They, along with the American Bar Association and other organizations, believe lawyer involvement is crucial to assuring a fair election and that our democracy is protected.
The upcoming election poses particular challenges. Lawyers, as officers of the court and stewards of the legal profession, have a special obligation to protect the rule of law. Lawyers and law students have skills that equip them well to be of service to their community. Assuring a fair election is not a partisan issue.
The City Bar has created a web page with information on how and where lawyers and law students can sign up nationwide to be poll workers and answer voter information hotlines. The web page includes a link to the Election Official Legal Defense Network, a nonpartisan organization established by lawyers with experience working for both major parties, to facilitate the pro bono involvement of attorneys in defending election officials threatened with prosecution, harassment or violence for performing their statutory duties.
